Financial support

Ocean Womxn are given financial support to cover their registration fees at UCT as well as relocation costs. Each student is guaranteed a full bursary covering three years for master’s students and four years for PhD students.

Each student will also be provided with a new laptop at the start of the programme, ensuring each womxn has the tools they need to begin academic work.

Funding is also provided to help equip womxn with the field gear needed for ocean activities and fieldwork.

Training at sea

Aspects of field-based ocean studies involve some knowledge of water activities including: swimming, boating and scuba diving. We provide optional orientation training to Ocean Womxn, including swimming lessons, scuba diving certification and skipper training.

SEAmester

Ocean Womxn will be able to combine classroom learning with practical applications while aboard a ship-based, hands-on classroom.

SEAmester offers womxn an opportunity to better understand ocean processes and the technical aspects of ocean science. It also strengthens the skills needed to work with various instruments and provides on-deck training. Learn more here.

Research projects

Ocean Womxn will choose from a number of research projects led by the womxn who founded the programme. Learn more about those projects here.

These research areas are priorities for the South African government, with applications to build academic skills, professional development and technical knowledge that will boost their career prospects.
