OUR TEAM

Womxn in science who recognise the need for change.

Ocean Womxn was launched by four womxn from the UCT Department of Oceanography through the UCT Vice Chancellor’s “Scholarship for Womxn by Womxn” programme.

Their own experiences as womxn in the field have made them passionate about helping womxn achieve excellence in oceanography.

Katye Altieri
A lecturer in the Department of Oceanography at UCT. Altieri’s research focuses on atmospheric chemistry in the marine environment. Learn more here.

Isabelle Ansorge
Head of the Department of Oceanography at UCT. Ansorge’s research focuses on the impact changes in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current have on Subantarctic Islands and impact their ecosystem functioning. In addition, she heads-up the SEAmester programme. Ansorge is the PI on the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (SAMOC-SA) programme.

Sarah Fawcett
Senior lecturer in the Department of Oceanography at UCT. Fawcett’s research focuses on biogeochemical cycling in the ocean - past, present and future - with a particular focus on using measurements of nitrogen isotopes to understand ocean productivity, ecosystem function and climate. Juliet Hermes
Hermes manages the South African Environmental Observation Network’s Egagasini node for marine offshore systems. She is also closely affiliated to UCT, and she and her team supervise a number of students there. Hermes is PI on the Agulhas System Climate Array which partners with SEAmester and supports numerous modeling programmes. She also runs a curriculum-based education outreach program for grades 8-10.
